- Story Text: The South Korean navy conducted military drills on Saturday (October 17) off the large port city of Busan, about 417km (259 miles) south of Seoul.
Alongside the drills, the navy held a fleet review to mark the 70th anniversary of South Korea's liberation and founding of the navy.
"Today, we're due to hold several naval drills including anti-ship, anti-air, and anti-submarine warfare exercises, as well as landing operations, special operations and a fleet review. In return for the people's support, our navy will do our best to rigourously guard territorial waters," South Korean Navy Captain, Choi Tae-bok, said.
The drills mobilised about 5,800 military personnel as well as an Aegis destroyer, 35 warships including a Landing Platform Helicopter Ship (LPH) and 35 military aircraft involving maritime patrol aircraft and Lynx antisubmarine helicopters, the South Korean Navy added.
North and South Korea remain technically at war because a truce was signed at the end of their 1950-53 conflict, not a peace treaty.
More than 1.8 million troops are deployed on the peninsula, making it one of the world's most heavily armed regions.
South Korea has marked the 70th anniversary of Korean Liberation Day in 2015, to commemorate the end of Japanese colonial rule, which lasted from 1910 to 1945. It is also the day Japan commemorates the end of World War Two. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
