- Story Text: "Suffragette" star Carey Mulligan called it fortuitous that her upcoming drama detailing the history of woman's voting rights arrives in theaters amid added focus on woman's equality and the feminist movement.
"I think it is overdue telling this story, I think it took 100 years to tell this story, which seems crazy because it is the story of our basic civil rights," said Mulligan. "All these conversations that are happening about the gender pay gap and woman's rights and woman's issues are over due as well. It all seems to be coming to a head at the same time, which is fortuitous."
Mulligan and her co-star Meryl Streep arrived on the red carpet in Beverly Hills Tuesday evening (October 20) for the premiere of the film, which at an earlier London premiere sparked feminist protesters campaigning against domestic violence. While the Los Angeles screening took place without incident, Mulligan took time to speak about "Suffragette's" stellar female cast that includes Streep, Helena Bonham Carter and Anne-Marie Duff.
"Working with the cast was amazing," said Mulligan, as she turned to point out co-star Meryl Streep on the red carpet. "First of all, I have never worked with so many woman, which was a unique experience."
Directed by Sarah Gavron and written by Abi Morgan, the film is set in 1912-13 and shows how the women in the suffrage movement attacked property and bombed post boxes to make their voices heard.
Gavron told Reuters that she hopes the film inspires discussion about furthering equality and also touched on the recent letter penned by Hollywood actress Jennifer Lawrence over the gender pay gap.
"I'm definitely aware of it and it is ridiculous that there is a pay gap," said Gavron. "There is no reason for it and these woman should be valued in the same way as men and I'm delighted that Bradley Cooper has just come out in support. There needs to be more transparency and that needs to shift very quickly."
