- Story Text: Protesters and police clashed in Thailand's southern resort island of Phuket on Saturday evening (October 10) setting nine cars alight, local residents and police said.
The violence occurred following a protest by hundreds of local residents outside the police station after a police car hit and killed two men on a motorbike, police said.
The deputy chief of Thalang police station Police Lieutenant Colonel Amnuay Kraiwuthianant told Reuters that police had attempted to arrest the two men. The men tried to escape the scene and drove into a police car, he added.
Police Lieutenant Colonel Amnuay Kraiwuthianant said dozens of people from the killed men's neighbourhood arrived at the police station to talk to the district chief of police who was not there. The crowd proceeded to protest and damage property, he added.
Video showed protesters standing and shouting at police, some threw objects which exploded as they hit the ground. Police wore helmets and carried shields as they moved to disperse the crowd.
Local media said Phuket's Governor Chamroen Thipayapongthada chaired a meeting on Sunday morning (October 11) with relatives of the two men, Thailand district police chief and senior army officials and promised for a fair investigation into their deaths. Several hundred riot police and soldiers, some sent in from neighouring areas, remained at the police station on Sunday, local media reported.
Local media have identified the two men as Pathomwat Panark, 22 and Teerapong whose second name was not made available, aged 17. Both were pronounced dead in hospital. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
