- Story Text: The United States and Australia opened talks in Boston on Tuesday (October 13) aimed at coordinating strategy to ensure freedom of navigation in the South China Sea, where China has adopted a more aggressive naval presence as it claims new island territories in the region.
U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, U.S. Defense Secretary Ash Carter, Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop and Australian Defense Minister Marise Payne opened the U.S.-Australia Ministerial Consultations (AUSMIN) at the Boston Public Library.
It was expected the ministers would hammer out details of a plan to conduct patrols within 12 nautical miles of the disputed islands which Beijing is constructing from landfill in an area of the South China Sea that is one of the world's busiest navigation and shipping routes. - Copyright Holder: STATE DEPARTMENT TV
