- Story Text: The 59th London Film Festival closed on Sunday (October 18) with the European premiere of 'Steve Jobs'.
Michael Fassbender plays the lead role in the film which is based on the best-selling biography of Mr. Jobs by Walter Isaacson.
It has received criticism that its portrayal of Mr. Jobs is overly negative despite the fact it is also being touted as a possible Oscar contender.
The movie spans a period of 14 years between 1984 and 1998, focusing on three major launches - the Macintosh in 1984, the NeXT Cube in 1988 and the iMac in 1998.
Speaking on the red carpet Fassbender said the man who co-created Apple was an 'inspiration'.
"He was a visionary you know. First and foremost he was very passionate, very driven and you know if you think about it he had a vision from the mid 70's to the late 70's that took him nearly 20 years to realise with the iMac in terms of computers and then what he did with Pixar and that takes an amazing amount of energy so I'm very inspired by him," said Fassbender.
Best known for his roles in the new X-Men movies and collaborations with Steve McQueen, Fassbender said he was also inspired by his director Danny Boyle.
"Well I think he's one of the great filmmakers, not only British filmmakers but just one of the great filmmakers, you know he's got all the things you want as an actor, you know you really trust working with him, he's very patient, God knows he was patient with me, and always positive, huge amounts of energy, and that's just as a director, as a man as well he's just a real inspiration," Fassbender said.
Oscar winning actress Kate Winslet plays Jobs's colleague Joanna Hoffman, a member of the original Mac team and the NeXT team. She told Reuters that she was lucky to have met Joanna Hoffman ahead of playing the role.
I really enjoyed that because she was able to share with me, you know, quite personal stories about her friendship with Steve, which was quite unique I think in that regard," Winslet said.
'Steve Jobs' is directed by Danny Boyle whose films Slumdog Millionaire and 127 Hours have previously closed the festival. He said it is important to make biopics about people who have impacted the world creatively.
"This is why you've got to do films about them. I mean this man is our culture. You know, you've got his phone, I saw you taking photographs with it, I mean you will take that to bed with you, you will share your most intimate secrets with it, now whether that's a good thing or a bad thing, but you do, we do," he said.
Written by Aaron Sorkin, the film also stars Jeff Daniels who worked with the writer on the television series 'The Newsroom', Michael Stuhlbarg and Katherine Waterson. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
