Australia's foreign minister attended an Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) ministerial meeting on Friday (October 23) in Indonesia's Padang, urging member states to increase their maritime cooperation.
During her opening speech, Julie Bishop emphasised how success in combating an increase in transnational maritime crime in the Indian Ocean was dependent on cooperation.
"There has been an increase in other forms of transnational maritime crime across the Indian Ocean, particularly drug trafficking, but also migrant smuggling, human trafficking, illegal fishing and illicit wildlife trafficking. Our ability to successfully combat these threats, trans-safety security development, would depend on the strength of our cooperation. The UN Office on Drugs and Crime's successful establishment of the Indian Ocean Forum on Maritime Crime - the IOFMC - provides a significant opportunity to strengthen this cooperation,' she said.
The Australian politician's visit to Indonesia is the first since the execution of Australian drug traffickers in the country.
Australia's ties with Jakarta deteriorated during former Prime Minister Tony Abbott's administration after the executions, as well as tensions over asylum seekers sailing from Indonesia to Australia.
The IORA is an international organisation with 20 member states including Australia and Indonesia. The Indian Ocean Rim, home to around two billion people, is a region comprised of states whose shores are washed by Indian Ocean waters. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
