Rapper Kanye West, ballerina Misty Copeland, actor Bradley Cooper, U.S. Supreme Court Judge Ruth Bader Ginsberg and journalist Jorge Ramos were among those named on Thursday (April 16) in Time magazine's issue of "100 Most Influential People."
U.S. President Barack Obama and U.S. presidential candidate Hillary Clinton were also included on the annual list of the 100 top global titans, pioneers, artists, leaders and icons, along with Apple chief Tim Cook, transgender actor Laverne Cox, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Pope Francis.
In the international field, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Pakistan's human rights activist Malala Yousafzai and Nigeria's Obiageli Ezekwesili were among those making the list.
The list is not ranked and the issue offers five separate covers.
Time's Foreign Editor Bryan Walsh, said "We're looking really for the people who have obviously the most influence on the world and that's defined in lots of different ways. It's where we put out a number of different categories. We try to bring world leaders. We bring together business people. We bring together artists and celebrities. We bring together activists and do-gooders. And the idea is to create a map of people who are having the biggest impact in the world today. Sometimes that's positive. Sometimes that's negative. We have people like Kim Jong Un and Vladimir Putin on the list as well. But really, it's just trying to get a sense of who matters in the world today and then we try to match them up with equally influential people in their field to create some sort of interesting comparisons."
Inside the issue, guest contributors such as Martha Stewart, Oprah Winfrey and Space X CEO Elon Musk write about the chosen 100.
"I really liked Elon Musk on Kanye West and those are two iconoclastic people. And to me that's really the best kind of comparison where you have two people who are gigantic in their fields, but not exactly the same field, but they sort of know each other in that kind of way. They are able to really compare each other," said Walsh.
He added, "You have Martha Stewart on Kim Kardashian. Again two people who you wouldn't necessary think go together, but really know each other in a special way who sort of understands how the other one works and can really show that person to the rest of the world. To me, you have Laurene Powell Jobs, Steve Jobs' widow, talking about Hillary Clinton. And she's someone who really has a unique insight here, who sort of is outside power, but understands what it's like to be a woman in the world today, understands how special and different Hillary Clinton really is. And that's really important when you are going after someone like her, who has been written about a million times, but you are still looking for someone who has a special insight. We also have Barack Obama talking about the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. And that's again two people on the same level, but from different parts of the world. They are able to talk about what they share as global leaders of two very big, diverse countries."
