- Story Text: Thousands of migrants crossed from Macedonia into Serbia on Tuesday (October 20), as the flow of people travelling towards western Europe continued.
Around 12,000 migrants were recorded on Serbian territory on Tuesday morning, according to Serbian officials.
After crossing from Macedonia into Serbia, migrants go through a security check in camp Miratovac, close to the border. They then continue their journey towards Presevo, where the Serbian government has established a registration centre.
Once they are registered and receive valid documentation, the migrants then travel mostly by buses to the Serbian town of Sid, where, when Croats open the border, they continue their journey towards Western Europe and cross into Croatia.
The European Union has agreed a plan, resisted by Hungary and several other ex-Communist members of the bloc, to share out 120,000 refugees among its members, a small proportion of the 700,000 migrants the International Organization for Migration (IOM) projects will reach Europe's borders from the Middle East, Africa and Asia this year.
It is also courting Turkey with the promise of money, easier EU travel for Turks and "re-energised" accession talks if Ankara tries to stem the flow of migrants across its territory.
Upwards of 5,000 people are flowing daily across the Balkan borders further south, from Greece into Macedonia and Serbia, both former Yugoslav republics with barely enough resources to cope. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
