- Story Text: Thousands of Shi'ite Muslims gathered in Bahrain's capital Manama on Friday (October 23) to mark Ashura, a commemoration of the killing of Prophet Mohammad's grandson, Imam Hussein, as security tightened around the city.
Huge crowds of people marched along the streets chanting and beating themselves on the eve of the final day of the 10-day-long event.
Hussein, a Shi'ite leader, was killed by his Sunni rival during a battle in 680 AD in Kerbala, now part of modern day Iraq.
Shi'ites Muslims, which make up nearly 15 percent of the Islamic world, mourn for a month as part of the festival.
The festival, which falls on the tenth day of Muharram - the first month of the Islamic lunar calendar - is observed by Shi'ite Muslims across the world. Many mourn his death by trying to feel his pain. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
