- Story Text: Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic held talks with his Cuban counterpart Raul Castro in Havana on Tuesday (May 19) for an official visit to strengthen bilateral ties with the island nation amidst a historic detente between Havana, the European Union and the United States.
Both leaders already enjoy warm relations with Havana an ardent supporter of Serbia in its stance towards Kosovo in considering Kosovan independence an illegitimate act.
During an official ceremony in the Cuban capital, the Serbian leader was awarded the Order of Jose Marti honour by Castro. It is the island nation's highest honour it can bestow on foreign guests and is named after the revolutionary figure.
Nikolic is the latest European president to visit Cuba as international dignitaries visit Havana to capitalise on its opening economy and warming relations with the U.S. and EU. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
