- Story Text: About a thousand migrants crossed into eastern Croatia from Serbia on Friday afternoon (September 18) by walking through corn fields between the Serbian town of Sid and the Croatian village of Tovarnik.
The new arrivals will put a strain on Croatia which already struggles with accommodating more than 14,000 people who poured into the country since Hungary closed its border with Serbia on Tuesday.
Stuck in Serbia, thousands were re-routed towards the Croatian border to resume their journey towards Germany and other countries in western Europe.
Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) set up a tent in the corn field only hundreds of metres from the border, providing assistance to people exhausted by their journey along the so-called Balkan route.
"Yesterday they were at our northern border, and since it got closed and they couldn't go they organised themselves very very fast. And they are here, you know. And some of them are coming back to Belgrade, and some of them are going straight from Presevo (reception centre in southern Serbia) to here. So you know, they have no other solution. They have their goal and they won't stop," said Vladimir Andric, a Serbian doctor working for Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF).
Most of the migrants are escaping conflict in Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan.
"Because also I'm tired of my country, so tired. I cannot live in (it)," said Ahmad, an Iraqi refugee from Baghdad, when asked why he left his homeland.
Croatia said on Friday it could no longer cope with the unprecedented number of people streaming into the country, and would allow them to pass through on their way towards other countries. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
