- Story Text: Central American migrants from a caravan travelling through Mexico towards the United States received food, medical attention and clothes as they rested on Tuesday (November 06) at a temporary shelter at a sports stadium in Mexico City.
The migrants are pondering how long they'll stay in Mexico City before starting to move slowly through Mexico toward the U.S. border. On migrant said their next stop would be the northern city of Monterrey.
More than 4,500 Central Americans, many fleeing gang violence and financial hardship in their home countries have been arriving at the stadium since Sunday (November 4) where the city government set up medical aid and food kitchens.
The day is marked by Americans voting on Tuesday to determine the balance of power in the U.S. Congress and shape the future of Donald Trump's presidency.
Wrapping up the campaign in recent days, Trump repeatedly raised fears about immigrants, issuing harsh warnings about this caravan of Central American migrants.
The migrants arrived in the capital, nearly 500 miles (805 kilometres) from the closest border crossings in Texas, four weeks after setting out from the Honduran city of San Pedro Sula.
Thousands more Central Americans were moving in groups in the Gulf state of Veracruz, the central state of Puebla and in the southern state of Chiapas, local media reported. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
