- Story Text: Wearing pink scarves underneath their helmets, dozens of Jordanian women rode their motorbikes through the streets of Amman raising awareness on breast cancer.
A total of fifty women were joined by around 150 men, who sped through the streets of the country's capital as onlookers looked on inquisitively.
The women, who are members of Jordan's Harley Davidson owner's club, hold the annual event to mark breast cancer awareness month in October.
But the group postponed the event this year after flash floods in the country's dead sea region killed around 21 people on October 25.
"We wanted to make sure we are more active and charitable in our community. So not only do we go out and practise our hobby, but we are also encouraging more people to participate, even if they are not bikers, they can help they community in the same way we do," said Noor al-Ashqar, one of the participants.
Another participant, Amani Amoura, said this event also proves that women are capable of doing anything.
"Girls who ride motorcycles send a message to the community that women are able to do anything in life, and it is not improper or wrong. Also we like anyone, in any career in life, to send a message and help our community," she said.
According to statistics released by Jordan's National Cancer Registry (NCR), cancer is the second leading cause of death in the country after heart diseases. The study also found that breast cancer is the most common among females in the country.
In 2015, a total of 1,143 new cases of breast cancer were registered, with eight of the cases being among men, according to the NCR.
The event raised more than 5,000 Jordanian Dinars (around $7,000) to support cancer patients. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
