- Story Text: Monaco says it will become the first country in the world to have access to the 5G mobile network, the fifth generation of mobile communications network said to be ten times faster than current speeds.
The principality's telecoms company Monaco Telecom says it will be ready to offer 5G services across the principality in time for when devices go on sale next year.
5G is set to provide smart phone users with faster, more reliable and more flexible wireless networks. The 5G network will provide 100 billion connections, 1 millisecond latency and 10 gigabits per second throughput.
The objective is to set up smaller and more compact antennas on rooftops around the city in order to provide 5G coverage for the whole of the principality of Monaco, as well as small antennas at street level to provide enhanced coverage for users closer to the source.
The introduction of 5G technology is part of the Monaco's Smart City initiative which aims to come up with innovative digital solutions to improve the visitor experience to Monaco.
Monaco Telecom says its 5G mobile network will be ready to use when the first smartphones capable of supporting the new mobile network become available in 2019.
The Chinese technology brand Huawei has teamed up with Monaco Telecom to set up the network.
Monaco is the second-smallest country in the world by area.
The race to rollout 5G fastest is hotting up, with Oman and Australia among countries hoping for bragging rights.
The hope is that 5G will help boost Internet of Things technology, providing the infrastructure needed to carry very large amounts of data.
