- Story Text: The star of India's victory in the 2011 cricket World Cup, Yuvraj Singh, arrived in New Delhi on Monday (April 09) after undergoing treatment for germ cell cancer in the USA.
Fans and mediapersons flocked at the arrivals terminal of the Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi, eager to have a glimpse of Singh, feared by bowlers as one of the cleanest hitters of a cricket ball.
Singh, who had been recuperating in London, was received at the airport by his mother Shabnam and they headed to their home in Gurgaon city of India's northern Haryana state.
The cricketer was told last year that he had a golf ball-sized non-malignant tumour but that diagnosis was changed in February to a cancerous condition called "mediastinal seminoma".
Singh underwent three sessions of chemotherapy in Indianapolis at the I. U. Simon Cancer Centre at the Indiana University Medical Centre in the care Lawrence H Einhorn, who had in 1996 headed the treatment of cycling champion Lance Armstrong, who was diagnosed with testicular cancer.
Armstrong had sent a message to the ace Indian sportsman, wishing him luck in his battle against the disease.
Yuvraj Singh burst onto the international scene in 2000 as the player of the tournament in India's victorious Under-19 World Cup campaign.
He was also instrumental in India's victory in 2007 in the Twenty20 World Cup, famously smashing six sixes in an over off England paceman Stuart Broad.
30-year old Singh emerged from a lean patch in 2011, bringing his career to its pinnacle as he took 15 wickets, scored 362 runs and bagged four Man-of-the-Match awards en route to India's victory after 28 years in the sport's most coveted prize, the one-day international (ODI) World Cup; which saw him being adjudged as the Player of the Tournament. - Copyright Holder: ANI (India)
