- Story Text: A woman in Indore city of India's central Madhya Pradesh state was allegedly gang raped inside a public transport bus by its staff and their associate.
The woman took the private bus from Dewas, which is around 40 km from Indore. On entering the city, all passengers except her got off at Vijay Nagar.
The driver and the conductor then took the bus to a nearby flyover, where their associate boarded the bus, the three allegedly gang raped the woman.
A police official, Manoj Ratnakar, told the reporters on Saturday (March 16) that the three accused have been arrested.
"The victim has lodged a complaint against the three accused who were involved in the case. The accused included the bus driver, conductor and a passenger. The case was registered in the Vijay Nagar station. All the three accused have been arrested and we have seized the bus in which the incident took place," said Ratnakar.
The three arrested accused were identified as Rajesh, Lala and Zahid. The incident took place at around 2:30 in the afternoon on Friday (March 15).
Police said the bus, which was seized had tinted windows despite a recent crackdown against such vehicles in Madhya Pradesh and other states after the rape of a 23 year old woman inside a moving bus in New Delhi which sparked nation wide protests across the country demanding stringent laws for safety of women.
The assault horrified the nation and triggered nationwide protests, a toughening of rape laws and an intense debate about rampant crime against women in India.
The woman had died of internal injuries in Singapore two weeks after the December 16 attack that turned a global spotlight on the treatment of women in India.
India has robust gender laws, but they are hardly enforced, partly because a feudal mindset is as prevalent among bureaucrats, magistrates and the police as it is elsewhere. Politicians are also unwilling to crack down on customary biases against women for fear of losing. - Copyright Holder: ANI (India)
