International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach on Monday (April 27) announced that India will not bid to host the 2024 Olympics.
Local media had been speculating on the possibility of an Indian bid for the 2024 Olympics when Bach met Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
"We are of course aware of this speculation and quite frankly we were little bit surprised about this speculation because for different reasons. We think it may be a little bit too quick now for India to have successful Olympic Games in 2024," said Bach in New Delhi.
Prime Minister Modi sought the IOC President's support in making India a hub of sports infrastructure, sports technology, and sports equipment manufacturing.
Bach said Modi expressed his intention to promote India on the global sports map.
"He (Modi) is seriously looking into Olympic candidature but wants to have this well prepared and wants to have all the expertise behind of the sports, of the government and of civil society and therefore he also considers that building such successful candidature from now September 2015 may be a little bit difficult," added Bach.
New Delhi hosted the Asian Games in 1951 and 1982 but the IOA faced heavy criticism over corruption charges and delays in construction while organising the 2010 Commonwealth Games.
