- Story Text: Indian batsman Sachin Tendulkar set a world record
for most test hundreds on Saturday (December 10), stroking
his 35th century to surpass compatriot Sunil Gavaskar.
The 32-year-old Mumbai batsman reached the milestone on
the opening day of the second test against Sri Lanka.
The batsman spent tense moments on 99 before turning
Sri Lankan fast bowler Chaminda Vaas to square leg for the
all-important single.
An emotional Tendulkar punched the air in delight and
raised his arms before looking skywards to say a silent
prayer, wiping away a tear.
He was hugged by teammate Saurav Ganguly and
congratulated by the Sri Lankan players with a crowd of
over 20,000 giving him a standing ovation.
Fans were all praises for the star batsman as he scored
his record 35th century.
"I think he is the best batsman in the Indian squad and
he will go further," said Ashwin, a cricket fan in New
Delhi.
"I feel pretty good he did a wonderful job by making 35
centuries. I hope that he should continue like this and he
can make 36 centuries also why not?" another fan Anand
Malhotra added.
The Mumbai batsman had dug in for around
three-and-a-half hours to lift his team out of trouble,
becoming increasingly aggressive in the final session of
play despite fading light.
Tendulkar, the most successful one-day batsman as well,
walked away with the crowd cheering after play was halted
once he had reached the milestone.
Sachin Tendulkar, born on April 24, 1973, made his test
debut versus Pakistan in Karachi in November 1989. He has
played 125 tests scoring 10,134 runs with 35 centuries at
an average of 57. 05 (before current innings).
While in the one-day edition of the game, he made his
debut against Pakistan in December 1989. He has scored
13,909 runs with 38 centuries and 71 fifties with an
average of 44.01. He also has 140 wickets to his credit.
He was declared the Wisden cricketer of the year in
1997. - Copyright Holder: ANI (India)
