- Story Text: The driver of the Israeli embassy car which was bombed in New Delhi described on Wednesday (February 15) how he pulled the badly injured wife of a defence attach from the burning vehicle.
Manoj Kumar Sharma and two other people in a nearby vehicle were also injured by Monday's (February 13) bomb which was attached to their vehicle some 500 metres (yards) from the official residence of Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
New Delhi police said a witness had seen a motorcyclist stick a device to the back of the car, which had diplomatic registration plates.
Talya Yehoshua Koren was on the way to pick up her children from school when the bomb exploded. She needed surgery to remove shrapnel but her life was not in danger.
Sharma told how he stopped the car at traffic lights, heard a loud thud and seconds later the bomb exploded.
"It took five to 10 seconds for the blast to occur, we didn't have any time to think and we didn't even realize where the noise came from and who the person was behind the blast. We did not know anyone was following us," he added.
"I was shocked and didn't know how to react. All the windows cracked and I was not able to see anything. Then I looked around and saw that madam was severely injured, I tried to get her out, since the car had caught fire and I thought that I should take her away from the vehicle, in case a second blast should happen.
"She was unable to move and as soon as I pulled her, we both fell flat on the ground and then I dragged her away from the car, so that she could be safe and took her to the hospital."
Israel accused arch-enemies Iran and its Lebanese ally Hezbollah of being behind the attack and another attempted bombing in Georgia on the same day.
Tehran denied involvement in the attacks, which amplified tensions between two countries already at loggerheads over Iran's nuclear programme, and accused Israel of carrying out the attacks itself. Hezbollah made no comment. - Copyright Holder: ANI (India)
