- Story Text: U.S. Defense Secretary, Leon Panetta, arrived in New Delhi on Tuesday (June 05) on a two-day visit, to deepen defense ties with India, which was listed in the strategic guidance in January as a country with which the United States wants to have a defense partnership.
The trip is Panetta's first to the Asia-Pacific area since the Pentagon issued its new strategic guidance in January calling for a shift in focus toward the region.
Panetta will hold talks with his Indian counterpart Arackaparambil Kurien Antony and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
Among discussion topics will almost certainly be China's growing power and presence in the region.
President Barack Obama's administration insists the shift in military focus is not aimed at any one country, but Beijing will be concerned, some argue, that the renewed US strategic focus on Asia seeks to contain China's rise as a global power.
Panetta is on a nine-day tour of Asia, which includes visits to Vietnam and Singapore. - Copyright Holder: ANI (India)
