- Story Text: New Zealand's World Cup cricket team sends its condolences to those affected by the devastating earthquake in Christchurch.
New Zealand's World Cup cricket team expressed its condolences to all those affected by the Christchurch earthquake on Tuesday (February 22), just after hours after waking to learn of the devastation in their country's second largest city.
The Black Caps are currently in India preparing for their second group match of the tournament against Australia on Friday (February 25).
But the thoughts of the team were very much on home after Christchurch was rocked by a 6.3 magnitude quake.
"It was devastating, really. We heard it at about 5.30 local time this morning," New Zealand team manager Dave Currie said.
"We informed all of the players and support staff who have families in Christchurch and they managed to make contact with all of them in the next hour or so.
"Fortunately, all of them are safe and well. There has been damage to some of the houses but families are safe which is the important thing.
"But clearly, it has been devastating."
Pace bowler Hamish Bennett, who was born in Timaru, Brendon McCullum and coach John Wright all have links to the area, which was still recovering from a big earthquake in September last year.
"We know that there have been about 65 confirmed dead and there could be more," Currie added.
"Certainly the thoughts of the team are with the families and the community of Christchurch for this devastation. It is an awful, awful thing that has happened."
Meanwhile the earthquake in Christchurch is unlikely to force a change in New Zealand's World Cup schedule, an ICC spokesman said.
"It's very tragic really.
"At this point of time, we can only give our condolences to those affected. But we don't think it's going to have any impact on the cricket World Cup as of now.
"Later on, we may sit down and discuss in more detail about the consequences of the tragedy...," he said.. - Copyright Holder: ANI (India)
