- Story Text: The body of nurse, Jacintha Saldanha, who apparently committed suicide after taking a prank call, arrived in southern India on Sunday (December 16).
Saldanha will be buried in her home village of Shirva on Monday (December 17).
Saldanha was found hanged from a wardrobe with injuries to her wrist in staff lodgings at London's King Edward VII hospital days after she answered the hoax call from an Australian radio station and put it through to a colleague who divulged details of Kate's health.
Senior leader of India's ruling Congress party, Oscar Fernandes was flying from southern Bangalore city to attend Saldahna's funeral.
"We have been waiting for a long time for the body to come and to share the sorrow of the family of the people of the place, they are also very sentimental. I have been to their house and been with the family members. They are very much touched, it's a sentimental thing for them. They don't even like to go to the media and convey anything. We should appreciate there feeling of sorrow," said Fernandes.
Last week's call made headlines around the world as did Indian-born Saldanha's death, leading to widespread condemnation of the radio station responsible and the DJs behind the stunt.
The media storm erupted after DJs Mel Greig and Michael Christian from Sydney radio station 2Day FM phoned the King Edward hospital, pretending to be William's grandmother Queen Elizabeth and his father, heir-to-the-throne Prince Charles.
Despite their unconvincing impersonations, Saldanha, 46, transferred the call to a nurse on the ward where Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, was being treated for severe morning sickness. The hospital has said Saldanha had not been criticised or disciplined for taking the call. - Copyright Holder: ANI (India)
