- Story Text: For former Indian captain Saurav Ganguly, batsman V.V.S. Laxman and fast bowler Zaheer Khan, the N.K.P. Salve Challenger Trophy starting on Sunday (October 1) in southern Chennai perhaps offers their best chance of a come back into the national cricket side.
Indian cricket team players and probables are competing over four days in a tournament that is seen as the unofficial international selection game.
Officials said they were looking forward to an exciting tournament ahead.
"The wickets are really good, it has not rained this time. The weather has been very kind this time. So we hope to have a very wonderful tournament," said K.L. Balaji, Media Manager, Board of Control for Cricket in India (South).
The venue, M.A. Chidambaram Stadium, has been dogged by the rain Gods of late, with the last two international fixtures washed out last year.
The three teams - India Senior 'Blues', India A 'Reds' and India B 'Greens'- will be led by national skipper Rahul Dravid, Venugopal Rao and Mohammed Kaif respectively.
Ganguly is already under the spotlight, with the October 2 match between India Seniors and India B already being touted as a Dravid- Ganguly face off.
The former and present captains have been seen as bitter rivals ever since Dravid replaced Ganguly when he was sacked following a string of poor scores and a spat with India's Australian coach Greg Chappell.
The tournament, introduced by BCCI in 1994-95 to spot and Test talent, has seen India Seniors claiming the trophy on six occasions.
India A has won four times including sharing it with India-B in 1998-99. - Copyright Holder: ANI (India)
