- Story Text: Athletes and officials from Australia, South Africa and Bahamas arrived in Delhi on Monday (September 27) as Commonwealth games organisers took part in a frantic dash to get the athletes' village ready.
The South African contingent totalled 113 athletes and officials and as more competitors flock in to the Indian capital their presence acts as a welcome fillip after a string of events which led to initial fears the games would be called off.
India promised to have the athletes' housing for the Commonwealth Games cleaned up by Wednesday, and said workers were laboring at double time to have all facilities ready for the opening ceremony on October 3.
The Games aimed to improve India's image as a rising power, but criticism of shoddy construction and dirty housing and security fears have instead raised questions about Asia's third largest economy. - Copyright Holder: ANI (India)
