- Story Text: India's Interior Minister Sushilkumar Shinde confirmed on Friday (August 23) that Mumbai police had arrested one of the five men accused in the gang rape of a photojournalist.
The attack on Thursday (August 22) night triggered protests and an outcry on social media, with many users shocked that it took place in Mumbai, widely considered to be India's safest city for women.
The victim, who is in her early twenties, was admitted to hospital in south Mumbai where she was in stable condition, a hospital official told Reuters by e-mail.
The attack took place shortly before sunset in an abandoned textile mill in Lower Parel, a gritty former industrial district that is now one of the city's fastest-growing neighbourhoods of luxury apartments, malls and bars.
The woman was at the mill on an assignment with a male colleague. The pair were separated by the attackers and her colleague was tied up with a belt while she was assaulted, said Mumbai Police Commissioner Satyapal Singh.
Speaking outside the parliament, Interior Minister Sushilkumar Shinde said he had spoken to the Mumbai police commissioner, Satyapal Singh, who had confirmed the arrest.
"This incident, which has happened in Mumbai, is a state matter, even then I spoke to the police commissioner, they are investigating the matter, they have taken one accused into custody and the rest is in progress," said Shinde.
Mumbai police have released the sketches of the five accused.
While the interior minister said only one man had been arrested, a Mumbai lawmaker Murli Deora, said all five accused had been arrested and one of them had also confessed to the crime.
"I am glad to inform you that this case is cracked and those who were guilty, five persons, they are all arrested and they are all in the police lockup. One person who was supposed to be responsible for the rape is also arrested and he has admitted the crime," said Deora.
Women's safety in India has been in the spotlight this year following the brutal gang rape of a 23-year-old student on a moving bus in New Delhi in December, which led thousands of Indians to take to the streets in protest. The woman died of her injuries two weeks later in a Singapore hospital.
The trials of the four men and one juvenile accused of the December attack are expected to conclude within the next three weeks.
The verdict on the juvenile suspect is due to be passed on August 31. Closing arguments in the trial of the four adult suspects started on Thursday. - Copyright Holder: ANI (India)
