- Story Text: Three people have died and 900 fallen ill following an outbreak of diarrhoea in Doda district of northern India's Jammu and Kashmir, forcing the district administration to seek the help from the Army on Saturday (August 29).
The Chief Medical Officer blamed the rain that has fallen in the region recently.
"Due to the constant rain the water became contaminated and people drank that water. This is a water-borne disease," Bashir Ahmed Butt said.
Locals have praised the army for bringing aid.
"For the past two days I was vomiting and got admitted in the hospital. The Army and the doctors are helping a lot. I was on the verge of dying," said Milap Sigh Rana, sitting in an army tent with a glucose drip in his arm.
The Army has put up eight tents with five doctors and 26 paramedics providing round the clock aid to affected patients.
Diarrhoea causes dehydration. Children are more likely than adults to die because they become dehydrated more quickly. Diarrhoea is also a major cause of child malnutrition. - Copyright Holder: ANI (India)
