- Story Text: Sonia Gandhi, the chief of India's ruling Congress Party, on Tuesday (November 16) met the survivors and relatives of those killed when a building collapsed in New Delhi.
At least 60 people were killed and 80 injured when a five-storey residential building collapsed in India's capital on Monday (November 15) evening.
Gandhi offered sympathy to the injured and their family members at Lok Nayak Jaiprakash Narayan Hospital, where 28 of the 130 wounded have been admitted.
Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit blamed the building's faulty construction for the collapse and said her government would order a probe into it.
Dikshit said while visiting the site that people have been evacuated and the area would be surveyed to pinpoint more such houses that have weak foundations and have to be vacated.
Local authorities said the building collapsed as its basement was waterlogged for days after heavy monsoon rains.
Many Indian buildings do not confirm to safety or zoning regulations, with owners building additional floors or structures without approval.
Meanwhile, the India TV station ZeeNews in Delhi reported that the owner of the collapsed building was arrested on Tuesday evening and a case registered against him. - Copyright Holder: ANI (India)
