India accused Pakistan on Tuesday (October 4) of violating its ceasefire after heavy firing and mortar shelling along the border in the Naushera sector of India's northern Jammu and Kashmir state.
Tension between the South Asian rivals intensified after an Indian crackdown on dissent in Kashmir following the killing by security forces of Burhan Wani, a young separatist leader, in July.
Continuous firing has left locals unsettled.
One woman said children in the Naushera area are living in fear.
India's interior minister responded to the fighting saying India will not let anyone destroy its respect and values.
A ceasefire along the border dividing Indian and Pakistani-administered Kashmir came into force in 2003.
Both India and Pakistan claim Kashmir in full, but govern separate parts, and have fought three wars since independence from Britain in 1947, two of them over Kashmir. - Copyright Holder: ANI (India)
