- Story Text: Indian husband killed his 35-year-old American wife, Arianne Willinger, in the city of Taj Mahal and later committed suicide by setting himself on fire.
According to police officials, her estranged husband Bunty, an auto-rickshaw driver, killed his wife following a quarrel and later committed suicide on Friday (February 21), suffering serious burns.
"In this incident Bunty (the auto-rickshaw driver husband) killed the woman first and then he went to his house and committed suicide by setting himself on fire. His auto-rickshaw has been recovered from the site and things found inside the vehicle have also been recovered. We will send the bodies now for post-mortem. More details about the incident will be announced after the post-mortem," said Superintendent of Police Shalabh Mathur in northern Agra city, Uttar Pradesh province Police also said that Bunty had met Willinger when she visited Agra in July last year. They got married in a court on October 11 and started living together in the Shaheed Nagar Colony of the city.
But differences soon surfaced in their relationship and eventually they separated.
Following their estrangement, Willinger complained to police and a case was also registered with the Family Court. However, it is said that the two kept meeting each other.
Reportedly, on Thursday (February 20) Bunty took Willinger out in his auto-rickshaw to a lonely spot and attacked her with a knife several times, killing her on the spot.
He later threw the body on the roadside.
Reports of rape, dowry deaths, molestation, sexual harassment and other crimes against women in India rose by 6.4 percent in 2012 from the previous year.
Statistics showed that 244,270 crimes against women were reported to the police in 2012 compared with 228,650 in 2011, according to the National Crimes Records Bureau (NCRB).
These crimes include rapes, kidnappings, sexual harassment, trafficking, molestation and cruelty by husbands and relatives. They also include crimes in which a woman was driven to suicide as a result of demands for a dowry from her husband or in-laws. - Copyright Holder: ANI (India)
