The lone survivor of a mass murder in western India told police on Sunday (February 28) that she didn't know why her brother attacked her and killed 14 of his family members, including seven children.
The incident - one of the country's worst and grizzliest massacres in recent years according to police - took place in Maharashtra's Thane district, 27 kms (16.8 miles) north of Mumbai.
Police say Husnain Warerkar, 35, invited his extended family for a celebration and then brutally murdered them by slitting their throats with a knife shortly after midnight.
He was later found hanging from the ceiling with a knife in his hand.
The sister of the accused, Subiya Parmar, was saved by the neighbours and taken to hospital where she was questioned by police about the incident.
"The victim said she did not know why her brother attacked her and other family members. I asked her why she didn't shout or did something to stop him? She said he did not let them make any noise, adding that someone heard some sound, broke the window and brought her to the hospital," said police constable, Meera Madhukar.
Neighbours and other family members said that the accused was a cheerful person and showed no signs of any psychological disorder.
"I cannot say anything because he was not like that nor was my brother (father of the accused). There was no work-related pressure. Only god knows what had happened to him," said uncle of the accused, Mohammad Zain.
Police say they are investigating the possibility that a property dispute lay behind the massacre, although a motive is yet to be established.
Local media reported that Warerkar had laced his family's food with a sedative before slaughtering them, but police said this was unconfirmed as samples taken from the house were still being analysed. - Copyright Holder: ANI (India)
