- Story Text: Students and civil rights activists protested in opposition to Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak outside the Egyptian embassy in India's national capital on Wednesday (February 2), calling for the end of his political regime.
Egypt faces major political turmoil as thousands of demonstrators campaign for Mubarak's ousting, while others believe he should remain until the end of his term, when he has said he will stand down.
Mubarak went on national television on Tuesday (February 1) night to say he would not stand in elections scheduled for September but this was not good enough for Egyptian the protesters, who demanded he leave the country immediately.
In New Delhi, protester Ravi Ray from the All India Sudents' Association (AISA) said Mubarak should step down.
"We are protesting for two reasons. One is for the support of the Egyptian people who are protesting on the streets and want the government to fall. And another is that we want the repression, which is put on the Egyptian people, due to which nearly 200 people have died, to be stopped. Hosni Mubarak should step down from the government. This is also a lesson for the American government, which believes in puppet governments and dictatorship," he said.
Akhlakh Ahmed from the Association for the Protection of Civil Rights said the protest was a gesture of solidarity for Egyptians.
"We also want to say that being the largest democracy we support the Egyptian people for their protest for democracy," he said.
Egyptians have been demonstrating against rising prices, poverty, unemployment and their authoritarian regime. - Copyright Holder: ANI (India)
