Security was increased across India on Monday (January 25) ahead of Republic Day celebrations to be attended by French President, Francois Hollande.
India's interior ministry said it believed the threat from Islamic State (IS) was "very real" ahead of the country's 67th Republic Day parade in New Delhi on January 26.
Police have arrested nearly 20 suspected Islamic State (IS) followers in a nation-wide crackdown.
Armed security personnel were deployed in the streets of New Delhi.
Security was also heightened in Srinagar city in the northern state of Jammu and Kashmir causing delays for commuters.
"Pickets have been placed everywhere and they (policemen) are checking us. I don't know the reason for it. It took us three hours to cover a distance which we generally cover in one and a half hours," said local resident, Izaz Haq.
Delhi Police issued an alert on Friday (January 22) after a cab driver hired from India's northern Pathankot city, the site of a recent militant attack on an air base, was found dead.
Three people are suspected.
