- Story Text: In yet another incident of a big cat's death, tourists found the carcass of a tiger on Tuesday (January 5) at the famed Jim Corbett National Park in India's northern Uttarakhand state.
Officials claimed that the tiger possibly died due to infighting over prey because it had several injury marks.
"Today morning (January 5), tourists, riding on elephant, spotted two tigers running away. After that we found the body of this tiger. It is a male tiger aged two to three years. It is young, robust tiger and its length is 262 centimetres. Its teeth and nails are intact," said Ranjan Kumar Mishra, park director.
In the recent years, many tiger deaths have been reported from the Corbett National Park, and the authorities have stepped up vigilance to keep a check on poachers.
Officials estimate that there are about 3,700 tigers left in the country, although some environment groups put the number at fewer than 2,000.
Trade in tiger skin and other parts of its body is illegal but poachers still operate with impunity because a single animal can fetch up to $50,000 in the international market. - Copyright Holder: ANI (India)
