- Story Text: Thailand's first female prime minister, Yingluck Shinawatra, met Indian President Pratibha Devisingh Patil on Wednesday (January 25, 2012) at the President's House in New Delhi.
Yingluck, clad in an embroidered coat and a black skirt, was greeted by Patil with joined palms, a traditional Indian way of salutation. The Thai prime minister, who will be the chief guest at India's Republic Day celebrations on Thursday (January 26), was earlier accorded a ceremonial welcome at the stately Presidential Palace.
Yingluck was welcomed by her Indian counterpart, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, at the forecourt of the ornate sandstone structure. She expressed views that her country was committed to improving trade with India and elevating the bilateral relationship to a strategic level.
Yingluck, who is leading a 100-member delegation of politicians and businessmen from her country during the three-day-visit, is expected to meet Indian leaders including Singh later on Wednesday to discuss various economic and political issues.
Addressing a business conference in the Indian capital after the official welcome, she said that Thailand and India would sign a free-trade agreement in mid 2012. - Copyright Holder: ANI (India)
