- Story Text: A thick fog descended on New Delhi, the capital of India, late on Saturday (December 25) and was still affecting visibility early on Sunday morning (December 26).
Passengers at the airport were stranded. Officials there said 38 flights had been cancelled and 42 diverted away from Delhi.
Trains were also affected and commuters struggled later on Sunday to find places when services resumed after visibility improved slightly.
At Indira Gandhi airport passengers said they were forced to wait all night and that airlines had done nothing to help them.
"I had my flight yesterday at 8:30 in the night and due to fog it got delayed and at 12 the authorities informed that the flight has been cancelled. The whole night I waited at the airport. The authorities have not provided us with any arrangements for other flights and now they are saying that you get your ticket cancelled and do the arrangements on your own. The flight has been cancelled due to dense fog; there were some technical issues. There was low visibility and some technical points were missing due to which they cancelled the flight. They are not providing any other means," said Rohit Sharma, a passenger.
Getting to the airport was also a struggle due to poor visibility on the road.
"There is a lot of problems due to fog. We faced problems in reaching the airport. Due to dense fog, it took us time to reach the airport. Visibility is very poor. On the way, many vehicles had an accident. Passengers are facing a lot of problems. Flights are also getting delayed," said Sarabpreet Singh Garewal, another passenger.
According to officials, visibility on Saturday night dropped below the required level of 50 metres. The airport authority had to then implement the Low Visibility Procedure (LVP) which means that even aircraft that have the technological capability to land in fog couldn't cope. - Copyright Holder: ANI (India)
