- Story Text: Wildlife officials in India's eastern Orissa rescued a baby elephant after it was separated from its herd on Sunday (May 06).
The calf, and 8 to 10 month old female, was found at a duck breeding centre near Ghatikia on the outskirts of Bhubaneshwar on Saturday, but forest officials decided wait for it's heard to take it back.
But when the herd refused to accept her, the officials decided to rescue the calf, which was injured after she fell in to a shallow pit.
The calf is now being treated in the Chandaka-Dampara Wildlife Sanctuary situated near Bhubaneshwar, capital of Orissa.
"Since it was isolated we rescued it and left it at the research station. We thought that elephant herd will take it with them when it will pass from there. But next day we found out that they have left and isolated this baby elephant. The next day we rescued it and took it to our sanctuary," said Akshya Patnaik, Divisional Forest Officer, Chandaka-Dampara Wildlife Sanctuary on Monday (May 07).
Wildlife officials are trying to locate the herd in an attempt to reunite the calf with its parents.
Orissa has an estimated 1,800 elephants, but its shrinking habitat force the animal cross over the human settlements, often coming in conflict with man.
At least 151 elephants were poached in the state between 1991-2001 while another 125 died of natural reasons or epidemics. The federal environment and forest ministry has drawn up a Project Elephant to conserve the Asiatic elephant population in the country.
India has an estimated 30,000 wild and captive elephants. - Copyright Holder: ANI (India)
