- Story Text: India's Civil Aviation Minister Ashok Gajapathi Raju said on Friday (July 18) that the country had issued an alert to its airlines to avoid Ukraine airspace following the downing of a Malaysian airliner, killing all 298 people on board.
The Boeing 777, on a flight from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur, came down in the Donetsk region of Ukraine, near the Russian border, on Thursday (July 17).
"I think India has alerted its own airlines - Jet or Air India and they are avoiding Ukraine as of now," Raju told reporters.
Malaysia Airlines flight MH17, which was operating as a code-share flight with the Dutch flagship carrier KLM, was carrying at least 154 Dutch citizens, at least 27 Australians, 23 Malaysians, 11 Indonesians, six Britons, four Germans, four Belgians, three Filipinos and one Canadian.
Raju said there were no Indians on the crashed airliner.
"It's an unfortunate incident but no Indian citizen was on board," Raju said.
Ukrainian authorities have accused "terrorists" - militants fighting to unite eastern Ukraine with Russia - of shooting down the Boeing 777-200. The rebels denied responsibility.
The United States believes a surface-to-air missile brought down the plane, an incident that sharply raises the stakes in a conflict between Kiev and pro-Moscow rebels. - Copyright Holder: ANI (India)
