- Story Text: The International Cricket Council's (ICC) Global Cricket Academy will be the hub for the gentleman's game when it opens in two years time, officials said on Monday (October 30).
The Academy is part of the Dubai Sports City development.
"What we are seeking to do with Dubai Sports City and the Global Cricket Academy is to adopt world's best practice in all aspects of the great sport ...and we're seeking to set a benchmark not only in playing and coaching, but also in umpiring, groundsmanship and cricket administration...the Global Cricket Academy is going to be a fantastic resource that all of our members from junior to senior levels and men's and women's teams will be able to use as we look to take this sport forward...and its location alongside a host of top sports in Dubai's Sports City means we'll be able to feed off these sports to ensure that cricket and the ICC remain at the cutting edge of the game," ICC chief Malcolm Speed told reporters in northern Mohali which is hosting the first semifinal of the Champions Trophy.
The Academy plans to import soil from the United Kingdom, Asia and Australia in order to offer a range of pitch experiences to trainees.
Former Australia wicketkeeper Rodney Marsh, who is the ICC Global Cricket Academy's first Director of Coaching, said the services of the best of coaches would be available at the Academy.
"Basically what we want to do is to get coaches from all over the world there...the permanent coaches we have no idea who they are going to be...we'll be advertising for those positions...but the specialist coaches...we wanna get the very best that are available...and are prepared to come up to Dubai and actually spend time with these people from all over the world...it will be a truly global experience," said Marsh.
There would be two international standard cricket grounds, each with seven pitches and 48 outdoor net pitches.
The Academy also packs the latest video analysis, medical and fitness facilities and accommodation for trainees.
These facilities will be available to cricketers in ICC member countries.
The ICC plans to make the Academy a focal point for the training and development of cricket players, coaches, umpires, curators and administrators. - Copyright Holder: ANI (India)
