- Story Text: India pays homage to former Prime Minister Rajiv
Gandhi.
India's next prime minister joined Congress party
leader Sonia Gandhi on Friday (May 21, 2004) to pay tributes to
her husband Rajiv Gandhi the 13th anniversary of his
assasination.
Gandhi was accompanied by son Rahul and senior
dignitaries including vice president Bhairon Singh
Shekhawat, at the prayer ceremony held at Rajiv's mausoleum
in New Delhi.
Gandhi and prime minister-designate Manmohan Singh were
also expected to visit the town of Sriperumbudur in
southern India where Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated by a
suicide bomber in 1991, but local media reports said the
visit was shelved as the two quickly returned to talks with
allies bickering over cabinet posts.
Political strongman Laloo Prasad Yadav from the eastern
state of Bihar had walked out of cabinet formation talks on
Thursday after his demand to be given the powerful interior
ministry was rejected by Congress.
It was another signal of the difficulties Singh and
Gandhi will have in managing fractious partners within the
ruling coalition and the country's skittish financial
markets did not take the reports well.
Investors are keenly awaiting the announcement of the
next finance minister, widely expected to be Pranab
Mukherjee or P. Chidambaram. Both are former finance
ministers and are respected by the market. - Copyright Holder: ANI (India)
