- Story Text: A stampede broke out on Sunday (April 24) outside the Sai Baba Temple as devotees gathered to pay tribute to India's renowned spiritual leader.
86-year-old Sri Sathya Sai Baba died on Sunday at 7.40 a.m. (local time) in Puttaparthy in southern Andhra Pradesh state.
No injuries were reported and police raised barricades to keep the crowds at bay.
Legendary Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar was among the dignitaries who poured into Puttaparthy to pay tribute.
"We all know that he is going to live in our hearts permanently. He will continue to guide and inspire us despite the fact that he has left his physical form," he said.
Sathya Sai Baba is believed to be the re-incarnation of 19th-century spiritual leader Sai Baba of western Shirdi and has millions of devotees across the world.
His followers include many political leaders including former Prime Ministers, business tycoons, movie actors and sportspersons. - Copyright Holder: ANI (India)
