- Story Text: Chief of southern India visited the site where a two storey hotel building collapsed, killing at least ten people and injuring 18 others.
A two-storey hotel building collapsed in India's southern Secunderabad city in the early hours of Monday with many still feared to be trapped under the rubble.
Rescue workers used cranes to search through the twisted steel and concrete of the City Light hotel after it collapsed in the early hours on Monday, eyewitnesses said.
Congress leader, Jetti Geeta Reddy who visited the site, confirmed that the death toll in the accident had touched ten.
"The death toll is ten and there are about 18 people who are injured and being treated in Gandhi Hospital. Very shortly chief minister will be coming so we'll have a much clearer picture. Government always comes forward in these kinds of situations. We have our ex-gratia for the dead and of course the next of kin and the ones who are being treated in the hospitals will certainly (be) take care (of)," said Jetti Geeta Reddy.
Chief of southern Andhra Pradesh state, Nallari Kiran Kumar Reddy visited the site of the accident in Secunderabad city.
Jetti Geeta Reddy said that the provincial government would provide monetary assistance to the kin of people who lost their lives and others who were injured in this accident.
A leader of India's main opposition, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Bandaru Dattatreya demanded stringent action against the culprits.
"It is a very sad situation and the government should given 15 hundred thousand rupees ($ 24.90 thousand) as compensation to the kin of the dead and take strict action in the matter. Wherever there are old buildings, like this 70-80 year old building, government and Municipal Corporation should look into the matter to avoid such incidents in future," said Dattatreya.
The City Light hotel, situated on Rashtrapati Road in Secunderabad, known as the twin city of Hyderabad, which was more than 50 years old, could not bear the load of the kiln of brick and mud which was being used to make haleem, a dish which is popular during the Muslim holy month of Ramzan.
Chief city planning commissioner, G V Raghu said that they were taking action against old and dilapidated buildings.
"This year, in the last two months only, we have demolished about 17 buildings in the city. 17 buildings we have demolished. So each and every building, we cannot suspect. So that is why, the some structural methodology, procedural method we have to adopt, like a self auditing system, of more than 50 years or 60 years age buildings, the ones they submit the audit report with a local body, or GHMC," said Raghu.
He said that the building owners should submit the details of their buildings in Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) and if they did not wish to renovate it, then the buildings should be demolished.
Police officials, fire officials and rescue workers rushed to the scene and and started clearing the debris to reach those trapped below.
Many Indian buildings do not conform to safety regulations, with owners constructing extra floors or structures without approval from the concerned authorities and beyond the sanctioned floor space index or floor area ration. - Copyright Holder: ANI (India)
