- Story Text: Chess tournament for the visually challenge held in southern Hyderabad.
Hundreds of blind chess enthusiasts took part in a competition in India's southern Hyderabad city.
Though all these young champions are unable to see the black and white board it did not stop them from chasing their dreams.
At least 100 chess players from six states took part in the South Zone Chess Tournament, which concluded on Sunday (May 1).
Devnar Foundation for the Blind, a voluntary organization, conducted the five-day tournament.
Saibaba Gudd, chairman of the foundation, said the winners from this competition will play in the national championship to be held in New Delhi from May 15-June 15.
"These winners will take part in the national tournaments and first three players will take part in international tournaments," said Gudd.
The players use their instinct and feel the board to make the moves on a special chessboard manufactured for the players.
The children in the tourney, with their trainers, are upbeat about the event.
"I have been an active chess player for the past five years. Also taken part in Asian chess championship, we are getting some exposure now," said Srikanth, a player.
Children from Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Pondicherry, Goa including Andhra Pradesh were part of the special competition.
This first chess tournament in the country for the visually impaired children was established in 2001.
