- Story Text: India's anti-corruption crusader Anna Hazare on Tuesday (August 23) refused to be admitted to hospital against the advice of his team of doctors taking care of him since the start of his protest.
The 74-year-old Hazare has shed over five kgs in a week-long hunger strike that has earned him more public support at the expense of embattled Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
His fast-unto-death entered its eighth day on Tuesday (August 23).
"Anna Hazare's medical tests have revealed a change in his state of health. We have advised him to check into a hospital for the sake of his health. However, Anna has refused because he wants to stay with his supporters. Therefore, we will administer to him an intravenous drip here itself, to stabilise his condition. We have told him that we may need to take him, we will confirm this in tomorrow's bulletin," said Dr. Naresh Trehan, who is leading a team of doctors taking care of Hazare, on Tuesday (August 23).
Meanwhile, at North Block, the office of India's Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee, Hazare's aides Arvind Kejriwal and Kiran Bedi negotiated with the government's representatives concerning the future legislation on the Ombudsman Bill.
The proposed Lokpal Bill envisages the setting up of a national anti-corruption watchdog to check financial mismanagement and corrupt practices that have deeply pervaded several democratic and civic institutions of India.
The protesters want the government's draft bill withdrawn and their own version passed by the end of the month, a demand, which senior government figures have said, is unrealistic and undemocratic. - Copyright Holder: ANI (India)
