Like I have said, the way they have played against England, you can't take them for granted, I think they have got a depth in their batting and bowling. They have had a quite a squad who have been together for the longest while. So I think they have been pretty well in terms of trying to do the basics right and that is something that we have to guard against and hopefully we can do that." - Story Text: The West Indies cricket squad warmed up for their World Cup Group B match against Ireland in Mohali, India with a rigorous workout in the nets at the stadium there on Wednesday (March 9).
The West Indies come into the match with victories over Bangladesh and the Netherlands but also a loss to South Africa. With Ireland having beaten England in a shock win last Wednesday (March 2), the West Indies will need to beat the Irish to help ease their route into the quarter-final stages.
After the training session, batsman Ramnaresh Sarwan said that one of their biggest fears was consistency.
"We have been trying very hard to get our consistency going. I think if we can get our consistency going we would be able to compete with anyone. So we have been working pretty hard on that," he said.
"I think if we execute our plans in the best way we can, we will stand a chance of beating any team. Like I have said, the way they have played against England, you can't take them for granted, I think they have got a depth in their batting and bowling. They have had a quite a squad who have been together for the longest while. So I think they have been pretty well in terms of trying to do the basics right and that is something that we have to guard against and hopefully we can do that," he added.
In the 2007 World Cup played in the Caribbean, Ireland defeated Pakistan to progress to the second round and although the West Indies comfortably defeated Ireland in their group match that year, Sarwan knows what the team are capable of.
"Yeah, we have played against them quite a lot and we have had them in the Caribbean as well not too long ago," said Sarwan. "So we know what they are capable of, obviously they have been improving vastly, it shows that you can't take anyone for granted in this World Cup. They showed their skill against England and of course we are not going try and take anyone for granted, we are going to go there and try to play to the best of our abilities and execute the best way we can."
Later, members of the West Indies squad chatted with and signed autographs for a group of cricket fans who have tested positive HIV-AIDS.
