- Story Text: Fifteen people died after consuming spurious liquor in southern India southern on Sunday (January 01).
The deaths occurred amid New Year celebrations the southern Andhra Pradesh state's Krishna district.
The tragedy sparked off a protest among the local people who asked the authorities to arrest the bootleggers.
Police said they were investigating the incident.
"There are only two toddy shops in the place and we suspect that because of competition someone else must have mixed something in the liquor that was sold there. We are sending the samples for forensic analysis for now," said Arvind Singh, Deputy Commissioner of Excise.
The owners of the liquor stores are absconding.
Police and the authorities are waiting for the results of the forensic lab tests to ascertain the toxic contaminants mixed in the hooch.
