The annual Dragon boat (Yuen Ng) festival was celebrated throughout China and Hong Kong on June 18 with the traditional colourful boat races.
The festival is held to commemorate the legendary Chinese poet and patriot Chu Yuan, who lived during the Chou Dynasty. He held a high position in the court of one of the major states of the time. but was eventually exiled by corrupt government officials. Lamenting his fate, Chuan Yuan threw himself into the Mi Lo River. Local fishermen were so moved by his gesture that they raced in their boats to try to recover his body, boating the water with their paddles to prevent the fish form devouring him.
Nowadays, the boa races have become serious sporting events, particularly in Hong Kong. The Governor of the British Colony, Sir David Wilson, dotted the eyes of the dragon heads on the bows of the boats before racing began. This year Hong Kong there were 83 boats competing, representing many local Chinese organisations and clubs. The races were held in the Aberdeen typhoon shelter , the champions were the Tung Hung Dragon representatives, who received their cup from the Governor.
