- Story Text: Doctors treating Indian yoga guru Baba Ramdev, who was hospitalised following his hunger strike against graft, assured reporters that his health was 'stable' and 'under control' on Saturday (June 11).
Ramdev, who had been on a hunger strike since last week, was admitted to hospital by the provincial administration of India's northern Uttarakhand state after his health deteriorated.
According to doctors, Ramdev had certain liver ailments and low blood pressure, besides the weakness caused due to the fast undertaken by him.
However, dismissing all speculation pertaining to the yoga guru's health, Deepak Goyal, one of the doctors treating Ramdev, told reporters in Haridwar that although Ramdev was reporting difficulty in speaking and sitting, his condition was completely 'under control.'
"Last night, we observed a sudden fall in Baba Ramdev's parameters, which we succeeded in bringing back to normal through immediate medical treatment. Presently, all the parameters of Baba Ramdev are in control but he is feeling difficulty in speaking and sitting. He is reporting symptoms of fatigue and weakness. This is the situation for today. A team of specialised doctors, who are experts in their respective fields, are administering the treatment to Baba Ramdev and the situation is under control.
In response to a question about Ramdev's blood pressure, Goyal said the yoga guru's blood pressure was 110/78 and his pulse was 68.
Ramdev, who successfully brought yoga to the masses through live telecasts, is revered in a country that places great emphasis on spirituality and health.
The yoga guru claims to have a follower in every household in India, and at least 30 million people tune in every day to his yoga programme that describes methods and teachings for treating anything from diabetes to high blood pressure.
An ardent critic of the government's policies, he has pledged to 'cleanse' the world's largest democracy of greed and foreign influences, and overhaul its political, legal and education systems which he says are hangovers from colonial rule.
Hot on the heels of social activist Anna Hazare's similar campaign, Ramdev began an indefinite hunger strike in New Delhi on June 4, with his followers across 624 districts of India joining for a day, to demand action on corruption.
However, he was forcefully evicted by police action during pre-dawn hours on Sunday (June 5).
Ramdev has even promised to form a national political party to challenge the ruling Congress party at the 2014 general elections, and contest all 543 seats across India. - Copyright Holder: ANI (India)
