- Story Text: Tibetans held protest marches across India on Sunday (March 16) in protest at the Chinese crackdown in Lhasa which the contested region's government-in-exile said claimed 80 lives.
The reports of high casualties came out after protests by Buddhist monks in Tibet turned violent, with China's official Xinhua News Agency reporting on Saturday that 10 people had been killed in what were the largest demonstrations in nearly two decades against Beijing's 57-year rule over Tibet.
Tibetan exiles all over India protested at what they described as Chinese atrocities against the people of n Tibet.
Monks in Dehradun in northern India expressed their anger against China and said they would not take Beijing's actions "lying low".
Yeshi Tharchen, President of the Regional Tibetan Youth Congress, said: The Chinese have done wrong to us Tibetans. They have committed atrocities against our brothers, sisters and lamas and then, after all this, they say that there is no human rights violation taking place in their rule? This is not true, things are not fine as they claim. We had to take out this emergency rally protesting against this. This demonstration will be carried out for the entire day. We are on a hunger strike and this is just the beginning, there is more to come."
There were protests in the holy city of Varanasi, where Tibetan students marched alongside the River Ganges shouting slogans and demanding independence for Tibet.
"While China doesn't stop the human rights violations, we will continue to protest. As long as we are alive, we will protest. We can go to any extent," said student Desin Dorje.
Security outside the Chinese embassy in New Delhi was increased because of the Tibetan protests. - Copyright Holder: ANI (India)
