- Story Text: A crowded bus collided head-on with a truck loaded with paints and chemicals and burst into flames in eastern India on Tuesday, killing at least 36 people, authorities said.
Local police have said 22 others were injured in the crash.
Nirmal Josh, a police official in eastern Howrah district, near the crash site on the outskirts of West Bengal state's capital Calcutta city said locked doors of the bus caused hinderance in rescue operations.
"Police reached on the spot at time but as the doors were closed we were unable to rescue the passengers. Others have been admitted to the hospital. 30-25 people have been killed,"
Josh said.
Eyewitnesses described the scene as horrific.
"We saw that people who were jumping out were burnt badly.
Bodies are also burnt badly and people are unable to recognise them," said R.P.Singh, an eyewitness.
Rescuers pulled 22 injured people from the bus, which was travelling from neighbouring Orissa state.
The truck driver and another man in that vehicle were also injured. - Copyright Holder: ANI (India)
