- Story Text: An Indian navy aerobatic aircraft crashed into a residential area during an air show in Southern Hyderabad on Wednesday (March 3), killing two pilots and a civilian, police said.
Three others were injured.
The crash took place while performing aerobatics.
"There was an air display which was being conducted by Sagar Pawan, which is a aerobatics team, with tremendous amount of experience and on many occasion they have put up the show And I understand in the final phase of the show one of the aircraft fears to have gone out of control and crashed into a building. The pilots have not ejected so possibility is that either time wise there was a problem or they were making all efforts to ensure the damage is minimised in any civil areas there. The inputs that I have got as of now, perhaps there are about seven people who are injured. But have to get more information. And my assistant chief of naval staff here is present there and as and when we get some more information we will convey to the media," Admiral Nirmal Verma, India's navy chief, told reporters in central Bhopal city.
The Kiran MK-II aircraft hit a two-storey building in a residential area near Begumpet airport.
Media reports said the aircraft was unable to pull up from a dive and went into a spiral as the planes were breaking away from the formation and going in different directions.
At the time, thousands of people were enjoying the spectacle at India Aviation 2010.
The cause of the crash is yet to be determined.
The trainer aircraft was part of the Sagar Pawan Acrobatic Team of the Indian Navy.
According to reports, the plane hit a cell-phone tower before hitting the residential building, which partially collapsed.
TV images showed the plane, a small indigenously built aircraft, which was flying as part of an acrobatic formation, swirling down and crashing into a neighbourhood close to the city airport.
Smoke billowed out seconds after the plane crashed. - Copyright Holder: ANI (India)
